Site Review Project
Only about 40% of the known cultural heritage sites in the LRWMA are identified in the Forest Service databases and files, and the precise locations of the sites of even their known sites, is questionable.
The excellent work of Becky Bruce with assistance of Pearl Wilson, Gert Collier, Mary Lee Steele, and Seaborn Farmer identified about 180 sites and for those sites, descriptions, and locations were documented to the best of their abilities, however, that was before GPS was available. The locations were plotted on topographical maps, and in some cases are excellent, and others are significantly in error.
At some point, approximate GPS locations were added to the Forest Service databases but only by use of the topographical maps and not site visits with GPS equipment. Adding to the confusion, the numbering system used for the original review, and that of the state were different and the sites are recorded now in the state (and FS?) using a completely different numbering system.
Between about 1995 and 2008, by 'tours' given by Pearl, personal visits by others, and the review of the map that had been kept by District Ranger Tom Hawks, now retired, independent of the archeological team, identified between 200 and 250 more sites. Some of those sites are very significant and all of them need documented review.
However, the Forest Service cuts, and changes of personnel have made any such review all but impossible.
The only place that all these sites now exist, is in my GPS. That needs to change.
I'm open to suggestions, but at age 67, I can't physically go back to them all. Maybe a group can be organized and scheduled area by area review of the additional sites can be made and reports be provided to the Forest Service for their consideration and possible addition to their databases.
Suggestions??
Here is a typical section of the LRWMA - sites identified with just 3 numbers are in the FS database, all others are not.
